CITY of SHADES
City of Shades Campaign Setting is involving due to its nature as a fully immersive, realistic yet alternative techno-magickal civilization: the culture of the Empire of Enlightenment and its shadow government, the Arcane-Assassins.
The technology of this world is not electronic, it is essential as in it uses essences of energies and it is demonic in that it involves 'devices for performing tasks', through bindings and pacts with demons of various abilities and power. It is a Cloak&Dagger world where Demons are an everyday part of everyone's life (and unlife's).
Most stories occur in the City, a bastion of intensity offering relative safeties for the sacrifice of freedom by way of contracts with the hierarchy, against a lawless outer world reputedly consisting of mundanity, ecological toxicity and wild dangers.
The original concept for City of Shades is an alternate to our modern world where magic has replaced machines, with political intrigue between clandestine factions vying for control.
"Everything here is about Associations." Dwellers have district-based colloquial accent where hardening and softening of consonants indicate nuanced meaning, "the hiding of openly hidden secrets." With A & E either side of a hard consonant, the word is pronounced as 'shards'. The word 'city' itself is a resonance of that. A place of double-think and overlays, ritually mechanised processes. The language is called by the ancient name of the place, Jdr (Jidta).
This Campaign World is where the Elemental Runes for Clockwork and Control Runes for Clone and Purify (Distil) were first added to the Brains&Brawn rules set and where the designers ran with the idea.
It’s the closest Brains&BrawnRPG comes to the SteamPunk genre with its foundation in Arabian Nights. It is impossible to stay away from the Shadows; where the Horror element lurks.
